New York Governor Kathy Hochul is expected to sign new gun-control legislation passed along party lines June 2, in the waning days of the legislative session that includes raising the legal age to buy or possess a semi-automatic rifle to 21.

The ten new gun control bills also include requiring a customer to have a license to buy a rifle. The previous law had required licensing for pistol and handgun purchases.  Red Flag law loopholes are being closed to allow more action to be taken when a person is suspected to be a risk to themselves or others to keep them from buying and possessing firearms and there are new restrictions on who can own bullet-resistant body armor.

In supporting the changes to the gun laws, the Democrat released a statement last night saying “We cannot be satisfied by New York’s already tough gun laws.” The Democrat says the continued shootings in the United States “makes it clear” regulations need to be even stronger.

Hochul adds the problem is not unique to New York and is again urging Congress to “seize this moment and pass meaningful gun violence prevention measures.”

Thursday night, President Joe Biden addressed the nation to appeal for tougher gun laws. In his impassioned plea to Congress, the Democrat urged restoration on the limits to the sale of assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Biden says if lawmakers fail to act, voters should use their outrage to turn gun violence into a main issue in the midterm elections.
