With fall approaching, hunting season for deer and bear in New York State (and Pennsylvania as well) is not far off. According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Southern Tier of New York is a part of the Southern Zone.

This year (2021), the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has set some new rules. They include hunters wearing a fluorescent orange or pink hat or vest when hunting deer or bear with a firearm, hunting times are now 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, and a new extension of late bow hunting season in the Southern Zone.

2021 Deer Hunting dates for the Southern Zone according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, include:

  • Early bowhunting from October 1st through November 19th
  • Crossbow from November 6th through November 19th
  • Regular from November 20th through December 12th
  • Late Bowhunting from December 13th to December 21st.
  • Holiday Late Bowhunting from December 26th through January 2nd
  • Muzzleloading Season for deer of either sex runs from December 13th to the 21st  and December 26th to January 1st

2021 Black Bear Hunting dates for the Southern Zone according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, include:

  • Bowhunting October 1st through November 15th and December 14th through the 22nd
  • Crossbow November 6th through the 19th
  • Regular November 20th through December 12th
  • Muzzleloading December 13th through the 21st

If you hunt in Pennsylvania, the regular deer season for 2021 is November 27th through 11th according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
