‘Mudcat’ Grant All-Star Golf Tournament Set for Thursday

The 18th Annual Jim "Mudcat" Grant All-Star Golf Tournament is being held Thursday at The Links at Hiawatha landing.  35 All-Stars and other celebrities will take part.  The tournament is organized and presented by Security Mutual Life and The Black Aces.

The tournament originated with former Major League 20-game winner Jim "Mudcat" Grant contacting a number of his friends and connections from his playing days and has continued for 18 years.

Grant coined the term "Black Aces".  These are African-American Major League pitchers who have won 20 or more games in a single season.

Aces golfing Thursday include Hall of Fame member Fergie Jenkins, former Binghamton Triplet and Binghamton Baseball Shrine member Al Downing and J.R. Richard.

Others taking part include Cy Young Award winner Vern Law, two-time World Series champion George Foster, Ron Blomberg, six-time World Series champion Chris Chambliss, Mickey Rivers, Mike Torrez and former New York Met Art Shamsky.

Super Bowl Champions John Schmitt and Johnnie Roland are also scheduled to take part.  In addition, a number of other celebrities will tee off in the tournament.

Net proceeds from the tournament support various programs offered by the Broome County Urban League, CHOW, Catholic Charities of Broome County and the Boys and Girls Club of Binghamton.

A separate fundraiser will also be held during the tournament to help support U.S. veterans, including homeless veterans of Broome County.
