National Police Week is the first full week in May. The local Police Week is celebrated the week before National Police Week, so that any officer and their families can go to ceremonies and other activities in Washington this week..

President Ronald Reagan started National Police Week and had it run the first full week in May. It's dedicated to the memory and service of all law enforcement officers that gave their lives in the line of duty.

Locally there will be a Police Memorial Basketball tournament at St. Pats in Binghamton beginning at 2 p.m. I'm honored that they asked me to be a part of it and I'll be reffing three games beginning at 2 p.m.

This and every year, I remember one of my best friends, Mike VanKuren, who gave his life in the line of duty while serving a warrant, his watch came to an end in 2004. Mike, thank you and RIP. Who are you remembering and honoring?
