Former Upstate New York Executive Admits to Mail Fraud
Kevin Harrington, a 50-year-old resident of Oneonta, New York, has pled guilty to charges of mail fraud.
The federal indictment against Harrington included two counts of mail fraud, as confirmed by United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Special Agent in Charge Craig L. Tremaroli of the Albany Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Harrington, who formerly held the position of executive director at First Community Care of Bassett, LLC, an affiliate of Bassett Healthcare Network, admitted his guilt during the change of plea. He confessed to submitting fraudulent expense reports seeking reimbursement for the purchase of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines.
To carry out his scheme, Harrington provided his employer with false invoices, claiming that he had paid thousands of dollars for medical equipment that was never actually purchased. Unaware of the fraud, First Community Care of Bassett issued and mailed checks to Harrington for reimbursement. The total amount stolen by Harrington from his former employer amounts to over $150,000.
Harrington is scheduled for sentencing on November 21, 2024. If convicted, he faces a maximum prison term of 20 years, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release lasting up to three years. The final decision on his sentence will be made by the judge, taking into account the specific statute Harrington violated, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, and other relevant factors.
The case is currently being investigated by the FBI, with Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Tuck prosecuting the matter.
