Jim Mudcat Grant Golf Tournament Raises $40,000 for Charity

A charity golf tournament, that is now being held in memory and honor of one of its founders, is continuing to benefit families and children in the Southern Tier.

Organizers of this year’s “Jim Mudcat Grant Legacy All Star Golf Tournament” say the event was able to raise $40,000 in spite of modifications that were needed under pandemic protocols.

Each of the beneficiary charities: The Boys and Girls Club, Broome County Urban League, the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse (CHOW) and Broome County Catholic Charities received $10,000 from the tournament.

The tournament has been held every year for the past two decades as a collaboration between late baseball great Jim “Mudcat” Grant and Security Mutual Life Insurance Company in Binghamton.

Grant, one of the original founders of the Black Aces club of Black major league pitchers who notched 20 wins in a single season, had a fondness for the Southern Tier, where he played baseball early in his career. He had a special interest in helping children in the community meet their life potential.

Grant passed away this past June.
