The 18th Annual Jim "Mudcat" Grant All-Star Golf Tournament is scheduled for Thursday, August 29 at the Links at Hiawatha.  Organized by Security Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York the events brings together dozens of former professional athletes and sports celebrities to raise funds for four are non-profit agencies.  They include:

The Broome County Urban League

The Boys and Girls Club of Binghamton and

Catholic Charities.

In addition funds for Homeless Veterans will be awarded.

Security Mutual Life Chairman, President and CEO Bruce Boyea made the announcement on Monday morning.

Former Binghamton Triplet and New York Yankee Al Downing was also on hand to address the gathering of media and sponsors.  Downing played for the Triplets in 1961 and compiled a record of 9-1 with an ERA of 1.84 with 96 strikeouts in 98 innings pitched.  He went directly from Binghamton to the New York Yankees.  Downing, a member of the Binghamton Baseball Shrine, went on to pitch 17 seasons in the Major Leagues compiling a record of 123-107.  He won 20 games in 1971 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and has been a regular participant in the non-profit group benefit.

Fellow Major Leaguer Jim "Mudcat" Grant helped invite the participants to get the tournament starter.  Many of them including Grant and Downing return every year to support the fund-raising event.  Anyone interested in playing or helping to sponsor the event is asked to contact Security Mutual Life at the Corner of Court and Exchange Streets in Binghamton.
