A landmark structure in the heart of downtown Binghamton that has been on the market for months is now under contract.

The historic First National Bank Building at Court and Chenango streets has been idle for the past four years.

Law offices and the Broome County Council for the Arts were among the tenants forced to leave in May 2021 after city code enforcement officials cited problems with the fire alarm system after an inspection.

Isaac Anzaroot, who owned the building at the time, said he had spent about $2 million to improve the building. He wound up losing the property to foreclosure in 2023.

The building now is owned by a Long Island LLC. Real estate agent John Maczko said the property is under contract and the prospective buyer is performing due diligence before deciding whether to move forward.

Maczko said he's continuing to interview others who are interested in redeveloping the building. The asking price is about $1.8 million.

According to The Binghamton Press, more than 11,000 people toured the First National Bank building on the day it opened to the public in June 1930.

The structure was built on the site of Binghamton's first bank - the Broome County Bank - in 1831. The first escalator in the Triple Cities was installed in the building in 1953.

The current building was home to First National Bank and its successor, First City National Bank, for several decades. It later served as the corporate headquarters for Binghamton-based Crowley Foods.
