Aldi is taking steps to open its first grocery store in Tioga County.

The company, based in Germany, operates three units in Broome County with stores in Vestal, Johnson City and Chenango Bridge.

Aldi is proposing a store on Route 17C in the town of Owego. The project was discussed during a town planning board meeting Tuesday night.

Representatives from Aldi attended the session to discuss safety, traffic and parking issues related to the proposed store.

Aldi is seeking permission to demolish the former Treadway Inn conference center and a wing that had been added to the site to construct a 19,600-square-foot store.

The original two-story hotel would be retained. That operation - now branded as Quality Inn & Suites - has 75 rooms.

The Tioga County planning board last week recommended approval of the proposed project.

The Owego town zoning board of appeals has scheduled a public hearing on the project for March 7 at 7 p.m.

Town supervisor Donald Castellucci said the new store would be "good for the community."

The new Aldi store would be located directly across Route 17C from a Grand Union supermarket. If Aldi receives needed local approvals, the store could open by January.

Aldi regional vice president Aaron Sumida declined to comment on the Owego project.

Aldi had sought approval for a store in the town of Owego in the fall of 2017 but that project did not move forward.

Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.
