Mark Your Calendars For New York’s Free Fishing Days
Sure, it's only February, but who says those of us who love to fish can't dream of the upcoming season? Of course, there is ice fishing for those of you who love to get outdoors in wintertime on one of many bodies of water that are safe to venture out on, but for the majority of us, we are looking forward to the warmer weather to fish.
And guess what's back this year? On February 5th, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced dates for Free Fishing Days in the Empire State for 2026.
Do you need a fishing license? No, the requirement for a freshwater fishing license is waived during the 2026 free fishing days.
Most of New York State's free fishing days for 2026 fall on a weekend, with dates scheduled for winter, spring, and fall. One date is on a Wednesday, for a good reason.
The dates are February 14th and 15th, June 27th and 28th, September 26, which is designated as National Hunting and Fishing Day in New York State, and Veterans Day, November 11th.
Free Fishing Days provide the perfect opportunity for residents and visitors to affordably explore, unplug, and get outside. New York State’s waters offer some of the best fishing opportunities in the nation, hosting memorable fishing experiences that increase tourism and benefit the economy. In addition to the many health benefits associated with recreating outdoors, fishing can provide more opportunities to connect with family and friends, something that seems harder and harder to do with increasing demands on time in today’s world. - New York State Governor Kathy Hochul
The purpose of the NYS DEC’s Free Fishing Days program is to allow New Yorkers to enjoy a day of freshwater fishing at no cost. Who knows, you may just find out that you really like to fish.
This program began in 1991 as a way to introduce people to a new hobby and encourage people to support conservation by purchasing a New York State Fishing License.
A wide variety of sport fish are thriving in thousands of freshwater lakes, ponds, streams, and rivers across New York State. Recreational fishing can be an exciting, affordable, and rewarding challenge that reminds us to slow down and take time to enjoy our valuable natural resources. Whether you’re new to the sport or a seasoned angler, I encourage everyone to get outside and visit New York’s waters during this year’s Free Fishing Days. - NYS DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton
