NY Releases $13.4 Million To Increase Access To Abortion Services

While many states in the United States are beefing up their anti-abortion stance, New York is surging forward with its stance that all women deserve access to abortion services.

On Wednesday, October 12, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the state would be handing out an additional $13.4 million dollars to beef up access to abortion services.

New York State created an Abortion Provider Support Fund following the United States Supreme Court's reversal of Roe v. Wade in June and this is where the funds will come from.

The money being released with go to 37 different providers and will cover 64 clinical sites in New York, with a focus on areas where women may come from out of state to seek treatment, as they're being driven away from their home states where access to abortion is being restricted.

Hochul made the announcement about the release of funds from the Judson Memorial Church near Washington Square Park where she said, “We don’t give up because we’ll fight, we’ll fight like hell to make sure that no one ever touches these rights right here.”

Hochul continued, “And we’ll be that beacon of hope. We’ll be that safe harbor for women all across this nation."

In May, when Governor Hochul began to hear rumblings that the Supreme Court would be overturning Roe vs. Wade, she unveiled a $25 million dollar fund to help women with access to abortion services.

The first round of money, $10 million dollars was awarded in July and the bulk of it went to organizations that are funded under the Comprehensive Family Planning Program. The Comprehensive Family Planning Program delivers family planning and reproductive health services to low-income and uninsured New Yorkers.
