Is the unknown scary to you?  Personally I think the health problems many Americans are experiencing could be the result of what we don't know is in our food or GMO.  Yes, it's not proven and it's just my opinion but something is going on with all the cancer, allergies, alzheimer's, and other health issues that were not as numerous 20, 30 or certainly 50 years ago.

What can be done about it?  Lobbyists in Washington are very powerful at blocking information on GMO's and companies like Monsanto, the maker of Roundup have great power over politicians.  As I've pointed out in past posts, including a brand of weed killer found in a popular breakfast cereal, on a national level, there have been efforts -- many shot down by politicians -- to label food that contains GMO including one that's on the table here in New York.

While China, Russia and many other countries in Europe block GMO seeds from coming in to their country and food supply, most American companies refuse to label foods that include GMO ingredients and pesticides for fear consumers will not buy the products. NPR reports that one company that is bucking the trend with the Campbell Soup Company, with the announcement that they are siding with consumer demands to support GMO labeling.  Thank you Campbell Soup for going against the trend.

It's interesting to note that according to the Huffington Post, the FDA has agreed to test  glyphosate, the herbicide that may be contributing to the massive killings of bees, monarch butterflies and other species.  It will be interesting to see if the FDA gives it a fair and honest test that may lead to answers many environmentalists, medical experts and scientists have been questioning.

As far as labeling, the senate is due to vote up or down on 'The Dark Act' (Deny Americans the Right to Know) very soon.  A call to your senator's office might be a good idea if you think it's important to know what's in your food as I do.  If you do, let your local senator know that you think it's important to support safe and accurate food labeling.
