Tens of thousands of Dick's Sporting Goods employees at the company's more than 800 stores across the United States are about to be furloughed.

The company, which was founded in Binghamton, has announced its plans to furlough the majority of its estimated 40,000 workers starting Sunday.

Dick's Sporting Goods operates stores in the Town Square Mall in Vestal and on Court Street in Binghamton. It also has a massive distribution center in Conklin.

In a statement, the company noted most businesses, including its stores, remain closed because of the coronavirus pandemic. The company reported it has become clear that its stores won't be reopening to the public "anytime soon."

Dick's Sporting Goods plans to pay all of its employees through Saturday and maintain current company benefits to workers through the furlough period.

Small employee teams will continue to work at stores, distribution centers and the company's Pittsburgh-area corporate office.
