Delaware Becomes First “No-Kill” State For Animal Shelters

One of the most heart-breaking aspects of the animal adoption process is the fact that animals can die because they cannot find places to call home.

According to WIVB, Delaware has become the first no-kill animal shelter state in the country.

A state must reach a 90% save rate for it to be deemed, "no-kill."

“Last year, about 733,000 dogs and cats were killed in our nation’s animal shelters, simply because they didn’t have safe places to call home,” says Best Friends Animal Society. "Together, we can change that and achieve no-kill for dogs and cats nationwide by 2025.”

The Best Friends Animal Society says they recognize that for some animals, "euthanasia is the most compassionate choice."

Best Friends also lists where your state stands in save rates for animal shelters on its site.

New York State currently listed at <13k.
