Authorities say a woman faces felony charges after she allegedly struck a child with a hammer during a dispute in the Town of Homer.

According to the Cortland County Sheriff's Office, 40-year-old Kyna Malchak of Health Camp Road was accused of hitting the child with the tool. She also was said to have threatened the use of a knife.

Sheriff's officers were sent to the home around 9:30 a.m. Friday to investigate a disturbance.

Malchak was charged with felony counts of assault and criminal possession of a weapon. She also was charged with misdemeanor counts of menacing and criminal mischief.

Malchak was arraigned in Cortlandville town court. She was ordered held in Cortland County Jail on $500 bail.

Investigators did not reveal the child's age or relationship to Malchak. They also did not indicate whether the child was injured in the incident.
