At a time when it would have been easier to run away from the shots, Mary Sherlach, Sandy Hook Elementary School psychologist ran toward them. Mary understood that innocent children were in harms way and wanted to do all that she could to protect them. Mary lost her life while protecting others.

If over the past few days you found yourself looking at pictures of Mary Sherlach thinking that you recognized her, you were probably right.  Mary (Greene) Sherlach was a 1974 graduate of Vestal High School.

According to the Ithaca Journal, Mary was an “all American girl” while at Vestal. She was a cheerleader, in the Color Guard, in Alpha Gamma Hi-Y and on the Yearbook committee. She was popular and well liked.

Mary and her husband Bill also owned a home in the Finger Lakes. From Mary’s website on the Sandy Hook Elementary School website:

My husband Bill and I have been married 31 years and are the proud parents of two beautiful daughters, ages 25 and 28…my husband Bill is employed as a Financial Consultant. We enjoy traveling and spending time at our lake home in the Finger Lakes in upstate New York.

Our thoughts and prayers are with not only Mary’s family, but the families of each of the Sandy Hook victims.

If you would like to express your love to Mary’s family and the Newtown, Connecticut community, we invite you to submit a Letter of Love here.  We’ll be accepting letters for Newton, CT through Friday December 28th and as they come in, we’ll mail them for you.
