In spite of dry weather prior to the official ban already having fire officials warning against burning brush, and the annual restriction starting March 16, Broome County firefighters throughout the day were called to several brush fires around the region.

There were no reports of injury or damage to residences.

Vegetation on the ground through the winter is normally dry in the spring with a normal snowpack and melt.  This year, with little precipitation over the winter, the leaves and branches are particularly flammable.  Windy conditions also quickly spread even a small spark into a large brush fire.

Residents are prohibited from open burning of brush and other debris through mid-May.  Burning of garbage is prohibited year-round.
