John A. Butler, a former chief of both the Binghamton and Vestal police departments, died at his home in Vestal on July 22 after an extended fight with cancer. His wife, Debra, and other family members were with him.

John Butler’s Career with Binghamton Police, Vestal Police, and Broome DA

Butler devoted his life to protecting and serving the people of Broome County. Rising through the ranks to become Chief of the Binghamton Police Department, then later Chief of the Vestal Police Department, and most recently as an investigator for the Broome County District Attorney's Office, he never wavered from his commitment to public service. Regardless of his title, Butler's mission remained constant: to seek justice, protect the vulnerable, and make Broome County a safer place for everyone.

Colleagues described him as thorough and demanding of himself first, someone who put in the extra hours and didn't cut corners, even after reaching the top of local law enforcement.

Family and Children of Former Chief John Butler

Butler was married to Debra for more than 26 years. He was a father to Marie Van Dusen, Flora Negros and John Negros, and a grandfather to Colson and Ellianna Rose, whom he called "Eleanor."

He also leaves behind his dogs, Cooper and Jaxon, and his cat, Kitty. His family is asking that those who want to honor him consider a donation to a local dog shelter instead of flowers.

Health Battle and Cancer Diagnosis

Butler's cancer returned in September 2024 after six years in remission. Through each setback, he faced his illness with extraordinary strength and determination, refusing to give up or lose hope. His resilience and fighting spirit were evident to all who knew him, and he approached each day with courage until the end.
