October is officially here and with it comes Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Broome County District Attorney F. Paul Battisti says his office is using the whole month to bring attention to the issue and connect people with help.

Listening to Survivors

One of the biggest efforts this year is the county’s first Survivor Experience Survey. It’s open to anyone who has dealt with intimate partner violence and lets them share what it was like working with police, the courts, and local agencies. The feedback will help shape services going forward.

Sharing Resources All Month Long

Throughout October, the District Attorney’s Office will post info on social media. These posts will point people to local agencies, state resources, and tools for survivors, friends, and professionals.

Help at the Resource Center

The office is also taking part in a new Resource Center at the City of Binghamton Court. It’s meant to make it easier for people to find brochures, handouts, and information while they work toward safety and recovery.

A Special Event: Purple Thursday

On October 23rd, there’s a big event called Purple Thursday happening at The Chalk Market from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Community agencies, STRIVE program partners, and service providers will get together to share what they’re working on. A press conference is planned for 11 a.m.

Working Together for Change

Battisti says the focus this month is on listening to survivors, supporting them, and holding offenders responsible. His office is partnering with local groups to make sure no one has to go through this alone.

The Work Doesn’t Stop in November

Even though October shines a spotlight on domestic violence, the District Attorney’s Office continues to support victims and survivors all year long and welcomes community involvement beyond the month.
