A Democrat running for another term in the U.S. Congress in the Southern Tier is sponsoring legislation to add money to a program for hiring police officers.

The Associated Press reports 22nd District Representative Anthony Brindisi says he’s looking to attach an amendment to a government spending bill that would add around $800-million to the Community Oriented Police Services (COPS) hiring program.

The proposal would double the amount spent in the hiring program in 2020.  The AP reports more than $350 million was distributed to police agencies in the U.S. through the Department of Justice COPS program.

Brindisi is facing Republican former Congresswoman Claudia Tenney in his reelection bid.
