Recalled Blood Pressure Medication in New York Could Kill You
Endo International's Par Pharmaceutical has announced a recall of one lot of Treprostinil Injection because of the potential presence of silicone particles in the product solution.
The presence of silicone particulates in an injectable product can lead to swelling. Even more concerning is that these particulates could travel to different organs and could block blood vessels in the heart, lungs, or brain, and could cause a stroke or in extreme cases, death.
Before you start panicking, you should know that there have been no reports of any adverse effects related to this specific recall. The affected product is specifically for the Treprostinil 20mg/20mL Injection. This is used for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension to reduce the symptoms associated with exercise and for patients who require a transition from epoprostenol to reduce the rate of clinical deterioration.
The recall is for Lot 57014 with an expiration date of 04/2024. It was distributed to wholesalers and hospitals from June 16, 2022, through October 17, 2022. If you or someone you know has been using this product, it's important to check if it falls under the affected lot.
Par Pharmaceutical is taking steps to fix this issue. They are sending written notifications to wholesale accounts and hospital locations that got the affected lot and arranging for the return of the inventory of Lot 57014 through Inmar, Inc. Wholesale distributors and hospital pharmacies have been asked to stop the use of the affected product immediately.
So what should you do if you've been using this medication? First of all, if you've had any problems with this drug product, it's important to get ahold of your physician immediately. Also, if you've had any reaction to the product, it's important to report it to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.
