Exciting things are happening at the Binghamton Zoo as they welcome their newest addition. A prehensile-tailed porcupette (young porcupine) was born Super Bowl weekend on Saturday, February 3rd. I guess that makes it the MVP....Most Valuable Porcupine.

This is the third porcupette birth for parents Mattie and Zoey. Zoey has given birth on Father's Day 2015 and Saint Patrick's Day 2016. Their previous offspring have gone to Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Zoo Miami to be matched with other porcupines.
The porcupette weighed 429 grams at birth and is now at 690 grams as the Binghamton Zoo animal care team continue to monitor the progress of the baby and the parents. This is a huge success for the prehensile-tailed porcupine's Species Survival Plan (SSP).
The porcupine is currently on exhibit with its parents at the Binghamton Zoo and is located at 60 Morgan Road in Binghamton. To keep up to date on the porcupette and any other activities at the 5th oldest zoo, go here.
