The Southern Tier Homeless Coalition and other groups are conducting regular canvassing of unsheltered individuals and families in the region to help gage the problem and offer assistance.

Binghamton Mayor Richard David joined members of the Homeless Coalition and Continuum of Care providers at a bridge on Water Street frequented by people looking for shelter to highlight the effort.

Authorities say they are not just looking to document the situation, but also want to make sure people facing food and shelter challenges are aware of services available to them regardless of their mental health, hygiene, substance abuse or other issues.

Meanwhile, an Elmira couple seeking shelter from the cold is charged with criminal trespass after they reportedly used a tire iron to break into a cabin in Smithfield Township, Pennsylvania early January 23.

21 year old Levi Bailey and 18 year old Alana Nye were sent to the Bradford County Jail.
