Another Broome County Pharmacy Prepares to Close

On the day one Binghamton-area pharmacy shut its doors permanently, employees of another learned their store would be closing soon.

Workers at the Rite Aid store in the Campus Plaza in Vestal were advised Friday that the operation would be shut down.

The store on the Vestal Parkway East was one of more than 1,900 locations acquired by Walgreens.

The Vestal store's pharmacy was converted into a Walgreens unit in February 2018, although the remainder of the retail operation continued to be run as a "Rite Aid."

Employees of the store were expecting the full transition to Walgreens would occur later this year. They were surprised when they were told a few days ago that the store is to be closed on June 17.

Despite the planned closure, a sign posted in a window indicated the store was "now hiring."

Representatives of the Vestal store declined to comment Wednesday about the planned closing, referring calls to Walgreens corporate offices. No information was available regarding the future of other Southern Tier stores.

The Pharmacy, an independent store in Westover, closed last Friday. CVS closed its pharmacy at 68 Main Street on Binghamton's West Side in January.
