I must admit, the first time I heard that the Humane Society was doing a Duck Derby 5 years ago, I was a bit surprised that it was happening. They're using real ducks?  Come to find out, they are the same rubber duckies that Ernie loved on Sesame Street and then all was good in my world.

Once again, the Broome County Humane Society will host their popular Duck Derby at the Holiday Inn in downtown Binghamton on Sunday, July 31 from noon-4pm.

The Humane Society is hoping to sell 10,000 ducks and have them race down the river during this fun family-friendly event.  According to the HS website, "proceeds from every duck adopted will go to The Humane Society, an independent non-profit animal welfare organization dedicated to the prevention of animal cruelty and finding permanent, loving homes for companion animals."

To reach that goal of 10,000 ducks, the Humane Society is hoping that people will adopt one or a whole flock of yellow ducks. There are some pretty hefty cash prizes if your duck wins:  First prize is $5000, second is $1300, and third is $750.  And it all helps the local dogs and cats that live and hope to get adopted to good homes in the Binghamton area.

Duck adoption starts at $5 for a lone duck, $25 for 6 quacks (1 free) and it gets better in price the more ducks you adopt. The day is fun-filled with animal lovers, great food, beverages, and even some adoptees featured at the Humane Society looking for forever homes.
