According to the American Red Cross, home fires kill an average of seven people every day and every 40 minutes, an injury from a home fire is reported.

In an attempt to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25% in five years, the American Red Cross of the Southern Tier is offering free smoke alarms to local residents.

This Saturday, August 6th, volunteers, American Red Cross staff and members of the Deposit Fire Department will visit homes in the Deposit area beginning at 10am to install free smoke alarms and provide home fire prevention and safety information to residents.

In the past year, the Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross has installed more than 750 smoke alarms in Broome, Chenango, Tioga and and Tompkins Counties.

No matter where you live, or what your income is, you can apply for installation of a smoke alarm by calling 607-785-7207.
