The 2025 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees have been revealed, and among the list is an Upstate New York native who could soon be inducted into the prestigious hall of fame.

The nominees, announced on Wednesday, include an array of iconic musicians such as Bad Company, The Black Crowes, Mariah Carey, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, Maná, Oasis, OutKast, Phish, Soundgarden, and The White Stripes.

Phish, a popular jam band, got its name from drummer Jon Fishman. Fishman, who graduated from Jamesville-DeWitt High School near Syracuse in 1983, has had an amazing music career that led him to this significant nomination.

Even though he started as a humble "tambourine kid" in his school band, Fishman never gave up on his love for music. Inspired by famous drummer Dave Hanlon and encouraged by his father, Fishman worked hard to become skilled in jazz and rock drumming. His musical path led him to team up with Anastasio, Mike Gordon, and Page McConnell to create Phish, a band that has become very popular in the jam music genre.

Getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is tough because only about half of the 14 nominees will likely make it in 2025. This year, there are eight new nominees on the list, like Phish. The final inductees will be revealed in April, recognizing them for their musical impact, talent, and other contributions to music.

Artists can be nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after they release their first commercial recording. The nominees are selected through a voting system that includes a group of more than 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry experts from around the world. Fans also get to vote and help choose the inductees.
