The world is going acronym crazy. Now, I don't pretend to be an etymologist, but I wonder if we are getting out of control with our abbreviations.  We've all lived with H2O (shameless plug time...our new Hawk H2O bottles are really cool), VW, BMW, KFC, A&P, AOL, HP, but there are millions more.  I've even been bored enough to call around places to see if the person answering the telephone at their business, knew what their abbreviated company name stood for. About half did and the other half did not. Why do we say, 'I'm going to P-A today' as in Pennsylvania, but we don't say, 'who are you meeting tonight in N-Y?'  I know there are some people out there that still saying 'on the world wide web," but most of us say, thankfully, w-w-w and if you're like me, you just give the web site name and hope the person you are talking to, gets it. A friend of mine is naming her new baby K-Z.  Isn't that a dog's name?  I'm just hoping the whole world doesn't start abbreviating, because I'll go crazy.

P.S.  What's an etymologist?
