The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Wednesday that commercial fishermen last year caught 10.1 billion pounds of fish and shellfish valued at $5.3 billion. That's a 23 percent increase in volume and a 17 percent increase in value over 2010.

A strong scallop industry helped New Bedford, Massachusetts have the highest-valued catch for the 12th year in a row.  Alaska may have led states in catch volume but the Sara Palin state was followed closely by Washington, Louisiana, California and Virginia.

Does this this mean lower prices for seafood in the Southern Tier?  Most likely not.  Due to the price of fuel to ship this fish to area restaurants, you won't see lower prices.  All I know, I have been eating more seafood in the last 6 months.  How about you?  Are you eating more seafood these days?  Who has the best seafood in the area?
