October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  The statistics are staggering.  It is estimated that one in eight women will develop breast cancer during her life.  Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in New York State.  15,000 New York women are diagnosed and about 2,700 women die from the disease.

During the month of October, women over 40 are strongly encouraged to get their annual mammogram.  The reminders are all out there with many walks, ads and pink ribbons.  But what if you don't have health insurance to pay for these screenings?

According to Carrie Horton, Coordinator of the Southern Tier Cancer Services Program, they offer a program "that can provide screening services at no cost to the patient."

The Southern Tier Cancer Services Program is a program of the New York State Department of Health, providing breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings for New York State residents who do not have health insurance to pay for these services.

To find out more on this program, contact the Broome County Health Department at 225 Front Street, Binghamton or call (607) 778-3930.  This program can save your life.
