Trees are Terrific! was the theme of the 2015 local level of the Arbor Day poster competition. Art Instructor, Charity Gipp of Oxford Academy’s fifth grade had her students follow the guidelines for the NYS Arbor Day poster contest that were originally set by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation; NYS Agriculture & Markets; and the NYS Department of Education.

Over 40 students entered the contest, but only three could be selected as place winners.

The Oxford Village Tree Board, who sponsored the contest, announced the winners last Thursday during a middle school punch and cookies party.

The winners are:

  1. Emma Peila
  2. Alexis Hall
  3. Emma Hitt

These winners will be receiving prizes by the Oxford Village Tree Board at the Arbor Day celebration and tree seedling give-away which begins at 9 am, at the LaFayette Park bandstand.

Middle School Principal Kathleen Hansen said that she would accompany the students in the park that morning and that the students are planning to read a lovely poem to the crowd along with quotes from famous people about trees.

The poems and quotes will focus on what trees do for our world.
