I remember as a kid, I would go outside and I never gave a thought about ticks. Whether I was playing in the woods or "haying" it in the fields, not once did a tick conversation come up...let alone being checked for ticks.

Fast forward to today and ticks are everywhere and we check our kids every time that they go outside. Here's another thing to keep in mind, don't forget to check your pet for ticks too.

You should check your pets for ticks EVERYTIME that they go outside. Dogs are susceptible to tick bites and they can be hard to find. If your dog is bit, it may not appear for a week or two, so keep your eye on your dog for a change in their behavior or appetite.

If you find a tick on your pet, remove it right away. You are encouraged to use a tick preventive product on your dog but be careful on your cats. Cats are really sensitive to many chemicals, so talk to your veterinarian before using any tick prevention products.

Here's something else to keep in mind. Your kids love their pets and can't wait to play with them. If your pet has been outside, it's not a bad idea to check your child for ticks after they've been around them.

You never know what has been brought in from outside and now is calling your little human their home. If you think that your pet could be bringing ticks into the house, then they could be exposing the kids...and you.

It might not be a bad idea to have your significant other check you for ticks too. If they do it right, it could be a rewarding experience, I'm talking about a Brad Paisley "Ticks" kind of thing.
