Police Week in the Southern Tier wraps up this weekend with demonstrations, displays and a child safety seat inspection at the Oakdale Mall. The Southern Tier Law Enforcement Memorial Association will be showing off their police vehicles and equipment.

On Saturday, the New York and Vestal Police along with the State University of New Police  will have a child safety seat inspection at the Oakdale Mall by the Key Bank parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Endicott Police will have a bomb squad demonstration beginning at 2 p.m. There will also be K-9 demonstrations on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. by the Binghamton and Johnson City Police Departments.

The local Police Week is celebrated the week before National Police Week. That's so any officer and their families can go to ceremonies and other activities in Washington next week.

President Ronald Reagan started National Police Week and had it run the first full week in May. It's dedicated to the memory and service of all law enforcement officers that gave their lives in the line of duty.

This and every year, I remember one of my best friends, Mike VanKuren, who gave his life in the line of duty while serving a warrant, his watch came to an end in 2004. Mike, thank you and RIP. Who are you remembering and honoring?
