It's Columbus Day!  What, you're not excited?  It sure isn't what it's cracked up to be when you had the day off in elementary school.  But then again, many things aren't as exciting as when you were 8.  I don't want to bore you with history, but I think we could all use a quick refresher.
520 years ago, on October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus (Cristobal Colon) made landfall on a small island in the present-day Bahamas, which he later named San Salvador. Columbus proudly declared to the native people of the island, the Taino, that the new found land would be the domain of Spain and the Catholic Church.
As we all know, Columbus was certainly not the first person to "discover" America. He just gets most of the credit for it.  He actually was in the right place at the right time.

What we remember of Columbus may be this great explorer discovering new lands, yet the historical record cannot be ignored. Columbus was very much a tyrant who used religion to justify his acts of brutality, enslavement and even death towards the native people of the "New World."
If you are lucky enough to have the day off today, good for you.  Take advantage of that Columbus Day mattress sale.  For me, I think I will get back to work taking requests.
