Don McManus was an extraordinary man. He was Town of Union Councilman, Supervisor and elected Broome County's first Democratic County Executive. His commitment to public service elevated him to the state level as a Regional Ombudsman, Director of Regulatory Affairs of the Department of State before serving as active Secretary of State under former Governor Hugh Carey. He retired as the Deputy Director of the New York State Thruway Authority under former Gov Mario Cuomo.

On November 20, 2012, Don lost his life after a courageous battle with leukemia.  During his battle with Leukemia, Don received multiple transfusions of blood and platelets. As an appreciation to everyone who donates blood, his family is having a blood drive with the American Red Cross in his honor on Friday May 17th from 1pm-6pm at Saint Anthony of Padua Church in Endicott.
