The Major League Baseball Player's Association presented a counter proposal to Major League Baseball (MLB) in negotiations to get the 2020 season underway.  MLB (the owners) had made a proposal over a week ago and was universally turned down by the players. Yesterday (Sunday) the Player's Association proposed playing a 114 game regular season schedule versus the owner's proposed 82-game schedule.

Under the Player's Association proposal the regular season would run from June 30 to October 31. Other parts of the proposal include:

Deferred player's salaries in case the postseason is cancelled.

Expanded playoffs for two seasons instead of MLB's one year plan

The option of players to opt out of the potential 2020 season if they choose to due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

A one hundred million dollar advance to split among players during the projected two to three week "spring training"

There is no timetable set for a response from MLB.  If they hope to reach an agreement and begin the season by the first week of July there is only a handful of days left to secure a contract between the two sides.

Some big questions arise from the Player's Association proposal.  For example with the proposal of 114 games means little time for rain outs and scheduled off days. What are the consequences of such a compressed schedule ?  In today's modern game it is common to give regular players a day off...many times once per week.  Combine that with a substantial amount of doubleheaders where often the stars will play one of the two games.  So what does that mean ?  It could mean that superstars who fans want to see (watch on television if fans are not allowed in ball parks) would miss a couple of games per week. If that is the case do teams actually get their money's worth from those stars ?  You can bet MLB is looking at that as well.
