Workers at the Johnson City Wegmans store are being permitted to wear protective masks during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Rochester-based supermarket chain now says "any employee who feels more comfortable wearing a mask while working may do so."

According to WXXI, a Monroe County legislator had heard complaints from Wegmans workers who said they had been advised they could not use masks.

On its website, Wegmans notes that masks are not currently recommended by the Centers for Disease Control.

Wegmans has installed plexiglass shields and additional cleaning procedures for register areas.

Additional hand sanitizer stations for employees and customers have been installed throughout Wegmans stores over the last few weeks.
