Area forecasters are keeping a close eye on the river ice as predicted unseasonably warm temperatures later this week have the potential downside of ice jams and possible flooding.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton is forecasting high temperatures on Wednesday, February 16 in the 40s with an overnight low around 40 then the high Thursday, February 17 reaching into the upper 50s.

Rain, runoff from melting snow as well as the break up of ice on the river could result in localized flooding.

Residents living near water and in flood-prone areas should especially keep up on current river and weather conditions.

Following the big warm-up, temperatures are expected to go back to near normal seasonal levels.  The highs on Friday and Saturday are expected to be near 30 or in the mid to upper 30s.
