One month after the last Big Mac was served, the walls of a once-popular McDonald's restaurant in Binghamton came tumbling down.

Workers from LCP Group of Vestal demolished the West State Street building that had housed the fast-food operation since 2003. That structure had replaced the city's first McDonald's, which had opened on a site across the street 40 years earlier.

The restaurant had been operated by Lattner Enterprises. The owner, Douglas Lattner, declined to answer questions about the decision to close the location. But a McDonald's spokeswoman said it was a "low-volume store with high operating costs and rent."

Broome County records show the property a 3 West State Street is owned by Robert Skrabalak of Montrose. He could not be reached to comment on future plans for the site.

People who operate other nearby businesses said they have not heard whether anything new is being considered for the property.
