Vehicle Safety Events Target Young and Old

Two events in Broome County involve vehicle safety but at opposite ends of the age spectrum.

A child safety seat check is being held at the Visions Federal Credit Union on Country Club Road in Endwell September 21 during the Credit Union’s Family Day.  Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Broome County Health Department says every year, thousands of children are hurt or killed in car crashes and properly used child safety seats and booster seats can significantly reduce the risk of injury and death.  Studies show, however, that only one in four car seats are installed or used correctly.

Families coming to the event in Endwell should bring their child’s seat, their child and the vehicle the seat is being installed in as well as the vehicle and seat manuals.

September 23, the Vestal Senior Center will hold a CarFit Event to give a quick, comprehensive check on how well an older driver and their vehicle work together.

CarFit is a national program developed by the American Association of Retired Persons, American Automobile Association and the American Occupational Therapy Association.  The check looks at the impact of changes in vision, flexibility, range of motion and even height and weight in older drivers on their ability to function behind the wheel.

Officials say older drivers are safest behind the wheel but more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash.
