New York Ranks Among America’s Most Eco-Friendly States for Drivers

A new study has found that New York is one of the most eco-friendly states in the country when it comes to driving. Compare the Market looked at all 50 states and Washington, D.C., using factors such as vehicle ownership, electric vehicle use, driving distances, transportation emissions, and the number of public EV charging stations.

New Yorkers Drive Less Than Many Americans

New York ranked third, behind only Washington, D.C., and California. One reason New York scored so well is that we drive fewer miles than people in many other states. The average New York driver travels about 9,548 miles per year.

That's lower than the national average and far below states like Wyoming, where drivers average more than 21,000 miles each year. Driving less means less fuel is used and fewer emissions are released into the air.

Fewer Cars on the Road

The study also found that New York has low vehicle ownership. There are about 570 vehicles for every 1,000 people in New York. That's lower than many states where nearly every adult owns a vehicle. Lower vehicle ownership helps reduce traffic, fuel use, and pollution.

Electric Vehicles Continue to Grow

Electric vehicles are becoming more common across New York. There are about 661 registered electric vehicles for every 100,000 residents. New York also has more than 90 public EV charging stations for every 100,000 people.

Lower Emissions Help New York's Ranking

New York's transportation emissions were among the lowest in the country, at about 3,770 kilograms per person. That is well below the national average. Lower emissions, combined with shorter driving distances and growing EV use, helped New York earn its high ranking.
