A stadium reconstruction project at Union-Endicott High School is expected to get underway soon.

Ty Cobb Stadium - located behind the East Main Street school building - is to be demolished this summer.

Union-Endicott School District superintendent Nicole Wolfe said some onsite construction will start during the April break with full time work scheduled to begin in mid-May.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program recently, Wolfe said this year's outdoor graduation program is to be held on June 24, a Friday evening. The ceremony could be rescheduled for Saturday or Sunday in the event of bad weather.

Wolfe said under the reconstruction plan, the stadium will "look very similar to the way it looks now." She said the design was developed keeping in mind the tradition of the stadium.

A new precast concrete plank structure and aluminum benches will be installed.

The superintendent said there will be new railings and additional seating at the top of the stands to provide handicap accessibility.

The precast concrete plank material is expected to be delivered to the site in mid-July.

Union-Endicott's scheduled home football games were delayed as much as possible to allow more time to complete the stadium project.

Wolfe said the goal is to have the facility open on October 1.

School district voters approved funding for the $1 million stadium reconstruction work in a December 2019 capital project referendum.

Although there have been many football games and a wide array of special events at Ty Cobb Stadium over the years, one of the biggest occurred in September 1984. That's when about 20,000 people filled the facility to hear President Ronald Reagan speak during a reelection campaign rally.
