U.S. Senator Charles Schumer of New York says he is pushing a multi-billion dollar bipartisan deal to make sure once a vaccine is found for the Coronavirus, it is fully covered by Medicare.

The announcement from the Democrat comes as officials March 1 announced the first confirmed case of the virus in New York State in a Manhattan woman in her late 30s who recently traveled to Iran.

Schumer said the rules for what vaccinations are covered under Medicare can vary so he and others in Washington want to make sure that when a vaccine for COVID-19 is developed, seniors, who are identified as most vulnerable, can get the vaccine at no cost.

Several lawmakers last week announced plans to add funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as state and local health services to better prepare for dealing with infectious disease, especially the spreading threat of the Coronavirus.
