The Truth Behind The Pirate Eye Patch
It seems like everywhere that we turn, there is stress, depression, and division. It feels like that everything has turned political and nobody is listening to each other. There is such a lack of joy and it feels like a weight on our shoulders and a pit in our stomachs
So let's take a mental break and enjoy some humor. Monday, September 19th is "Talk Like a Pirate Day" but we can't wait that long, we need something to break the tension now.
What do you call a pirate with two eyes, two hands, and two legs? A beginner.
What do you call a pirate that skips class? Captain Hooky.
How much did the pirate pay for his peg leg and hook? An arm and a leg.
How much does it cost for a pirate to get his ears pierced? A buck an ear.
What do you call a pirate without an eye patch? Eye-Eye captain
Speaking of that, do you know why pirates were known for wearing an eye patch? The assumption is it's because they lost an eye while swashbuckling on the deck of the ship. Believe it or not, that wasn't the reason.
The Truth Behind Pirate Eye Patch...Not A Joke
It was believed that they actually wore an eye patch so that they could see better at night. It's hard to see on the boat at night, they would use the eye patch to "trick" their vision into adjusting to the dark faster.
It can take about 20 minutes for your eyes to naturally adust from light to the darkness. So they would put on the patch and switch it from eye to eye and that would help them to adjust to night vision faster. They would also switch the eye patch when they would go into the dark to speed up the process.
If you want to try it out for yourself, do this. The next time that you wake up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, cover one eye before you turn on the light. Look at something, turn on the light, open your eyes. See how fast your eyes adjust.
I don't recommend that you try the above if you share your room with a spouse or a sibling. They might not appreciate your experiment at 3:30 in the morning and you might need the patch to cover your eye for a different reason.
The truth is out there and now you know. By the way, If you would like more Pirate Day jokes, go harrrrr.
