Town of Windsor Still Without Bank Office After Three Years

Efforts are continuing to attract a bank branch office to a rural town in eastern Broome County.

The only bank in the town of Windsor closed its doors in October 2016. That's when the First Niagara Bank office on Main Street shut down its operations.

The closure occurred when KeyBank acquired First Niagara. KeyBank decided not to keep the Windsor office open.

Town supervisor Carolyn Price says the lack of a local bank has been "very difficult" for residents and business owners. She said some people now make a 40-mile round trip to do their banking.

Price said local officials have been working with three banks on the possibility of opening a Windsor branch. She said there's been no commitment but "we're not going to give up."

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Price said Windsor may be able to take advantage of a state program that provides an incentive for banks to open branches in underserved communities.

The "Banking Development District Program" is operated by the New York State Department of Financial Services.
