The federal government will give the Town of Owego $1.5 million to help cover the cost of repairs and construction work at the Apalachin sewage treatment plant.

Town supervisor Donald Castellucci said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved the payment.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Castellucci said submersible pumps will be repaired and electrical panels will be moved to the second floor of the facility.

The sewage treatment plant sustained heavy damage during the 2011 flood.

Although some emergency work has been completed, Castellucci said many things remain to be done.

Castellucci said the planned work at the treatment facility should get underway soon. He said he hoped most of the job can be accomplished this year.

The supervisor said federal and state assistance should cover the entire cost of the repairs and changes at the plant.
