Federal Prosecutors say the Tompkins County man was sentenced Wednesday, June 8 to 33-months in prison after pleading guilty to possessing a loaded semiautomatic handgun and planning to distribute marijuana in the region.  40-year-old William Marshall was previously convicted of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in 2002. He had been sentenced to serve eight years in prison for that conviction.

Investigators say Ithaca Police searched Marshall’s home on August 18 of last year and seized a Lorcin .380 semiautomatic pistol loaded with seven live rounds that had been reported stolen from Norfolk, Virginia in 2014. As a convicted felon, Marshall is prohibited from having a firearm.

In addition to 33 months in federal prison, Marshall is to serve a three-year term on probation following his release from prison.

The United States Attorney’s office for the Northern District of New York says the case was investigated by the City of Ithaca Police Department and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations (HIS) with assistance provided by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the New York State Police and the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department.

The federal prosecution was conducted as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program which focuses local resources to identify the most pressing crimes in a community and develop strategies for dealing with those issues. Those local resources can include law enforcement as well as community leaders and educational facilities.
