Thunderstorms Leave Thousands in the Dark in New York

New York State Electric and Gas is still assessing the damage from a couple very strong storm systems that swept through the region during the afternoon and evening October 7. 

As of 6:40 a.m. October 8 this morning, over three-dozen NYSEG customers in Broome and 974 in Chenango County were without power as well as a couple customers in Tioga County and 730 in Delaware County.

The utility said at 10 p.m. they had over 22,000 customers across the state without power. 

There were no injuries in spite of numerous reports of trees down, wind gusts reaching 60 miles per hour, torrential rain and hail from late afternoon storms. 

NYSEG says with many residents at home due to the ongoing situation with COVID-19, they asked people to maintain at least a six-foot distance from crews and always stay away from work zones. 

October 8, the company had on its nysg.com/outage central site listed that they were assessing when power might be restored to some 977 customers in the Town of Plymouth, Norwich, Bainbridge and Oxford. 

In Broome County, including the Town of Triangle, residents were told to expect power back on by noon.
