Broome Passes 60K COVID-19 Cases
As health officials report the possibility of another summer surge of new variants of the coronavirus, Broome County has recorded its 60-thousanth COVID-19 case since the start of the pandemic.
In it's daily update Broome reported 60,042 cases in the Thursday, June 2 update and another 35 new cases on Friday, June 3. Friday, Broome also reported one more COVID-19 death for a total of 525.
According to the weekly Centers for Disease Control and Prevention county-by-county COVID tracker, updated on Thursdays, Broome and Tioga Counties have dropped from a high-risk for transmission ranking to medium. Chenango, Cortland and Delaware Counties are all ranked as low transmission risk. When Broome was ranked in the high-risk category, it was advised residents wear masks while in closed indoor facilities.
In the Northern Tier, Bradford County is finally listed in a medium-risk after being one of the top six counties in the Commonwealth for COVID cases. Susquehanna and Wayne Counties are both ranked low.

Health officials say the best defense against getting seriously ill, especially with the continuing mutations of the virus that have been reinfecting people who have already been sick, is by getting the vaccination and the necessary booster shots.
More booster and pediatric dose clinics are scheduled later this week at the Broome County Health Department and the Southern Tier Community Center in Endicott. The Moderna booster will be given Thursday at the Health Department while the Pfizer booster and pediatric and pediatric booster vaccines will be given at the Southern Tier Community Center at 1 Clubhouse Road on Saturday from 10 to noon.
