8:45 a.m. update: Power to more than 10,000 NYSEG customers in parts of Binghamton and Johnson City was restored around 7:15 Sunday morning. Electric service to returned to affected areas of Vestal at about 8:20 a.m. Some Johnson City residents reported hearing a "boom" as the power went out. NYSEG has provided no information on what caused the widespread outage.

New York State Electric and Gas reported more than 24,000 customers in Broome County were without electric service early Sunday.

According to a map of power outages on the utility's website, 24,302 customers were affected as of 6:30 a.m. That meant 22 percent of NYSEG's more than 91,000 customers in the county had lost power.

About 8,400 customers in the city of Binghamton were without power. 6,172 customers in the village of Johnson City were affected. Outage reports elsewhere in Broome County included: 5,079 customers in the town of Vestal, 612 in the town of Union, 524 in the town of Dickinson, 124 in the town of Maine, 94 in the town of Chenango and 23 in the town of Binghamton.

The power problem left many people without heat with temperatures in the low 20s. Many traffic signals were out of service across the county because of the power failure.

NYSEG did not indicate what caused the massive disruption in electric service.
